a centralized online marketplace for Hawaiʻi's small businesses

It started with a bold idea
that grew into
a community.
The Pop-Up Mākeke is a centralized online marketplace that provided support for Hawai‘i’s small businesses through the COVID-19 pandemic. It made a notable difference in the state’s economy during the first two seasons and to date has put $2 million dollars into the pockets of hundreds of Hawai‘i-based artisans and small businesses.
In April 2020, the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) created the Pop-Up Mākeke when the pandemic forced the cancellation of community events and temporary shutdowns of many local brick-and-mortar stores. We knew that many of Hawaiʻi's vendors depended on events and craft fairs as their main source of income, so CNHA set forward to build a virtual hub for over 300 Hawai‘i small business owners, artisans, and vendors to reach sell to tens of thousands of customers.
With weekly live shows broadcasted on television and Facebook live, we showcased shared the talent and unique products from our vendors directly into the homes of families around the world.
